Celebrating Black History Month in Baltimore

Friday, February 16th, 2018

Black History Month is the perfect time to celebrate influential African American leaders such as Frederick Douglass, who was born in Maryland in 1818.

Black History Month is an important time to reflect on African American heritage in the United States and to celebrate the accomplishments of the African American community in this country. In Baltimore, a city where African Americans make up 65% of the population, it is especially important to celebrate the academic, artistic, and political accomplishments of this community during the month of February. One excellent way to embrace Black History Month in Baltimore would to support local businesses with deep roots in the city, especially since those that are owned by African American business owners in the community. This can also be done by spreading the word through social media, television, and print materials, in order to educate residents of Baltimore and the surrounding communities about the importance of Black History Month in our city. Why Does Newspaper Ink Come Off?

Friday, September 13th, 2013

A weekend morning with a coffee and the newspaper is one of life’s little pleasures. There’s only one downside. Without fail, your fingertips are always covered with smudged newspaper ink. “This is a deficiency in quality that has gone on for far too long!” you might think to yourself. “This never happens with my printed materials from Time Printers!” How is it that generations of newspaper readers have had and continue to have their fingers smudged with ink and the newspaper industry has done nothing to correct this slight but consistent inconvenience?

The answer has to do with the speed at which newspapers are printed and distributed and the small amount of time this leaves for drying. Different inks dry using different processes. Inks with alcohol or petroleum based solvents dry by evaporation, which can be sped up by heating the paper. Newspapers are printed with mineral oil ink at thousands of feet per minute. There’s no time to heat the paper, and there’s little time for it to air dry before it’s shipped out to news stands. The ink is absorbed by the inner fibers of the paper and remains slightly damp because most of the paper is not exposed to the air to evaporate. Therefore, the ink from today’s paper will invariably rub off on your fingers.

At Time Printers, we’ll get your printed materials to you quickly, but we’ll make sure they’re completely dry first. No one wants smudged business cards or wedding invitations, which is why we maintain the quality of our work from the beginning to the end of the process. Contact Time Printers for all of your professional printing needs!

What is Thermography?

Friday, September 6th, 2013

Thermography is a popular printing process used to give a raised, three-dimensional appearance to printed letters on paper surface. The process has many applications and is often used it letterheads, wedding invitations, and business cards among other things. Thermography is a popular alternative to engraving, as it produces similar results in less time and at a more reasonable price.

The process of thermography involves three steps. The first step is choosing the type of powder to use for the print. Powders come in fine, medium, or coarse varieties, of which medium and coarse are used most often. Fine powders are useful for more delicate printing. The powder has a plastic base which allows it to melt in the last step of the process. The second step involves applying the powder to the print and removing any excess powder. Finally, the printed material is heated in an oven-based machine to temperatures between 900 to 1300 degrees Fahrenheit. The heating takes only two or three seconds, after which the printed material is complete.

Here at Time Printers, we offer thermographic printing to suit any of your needs. Invitations and business cards are a common request, but we can print just about anything you may need using thermography.
