Going Home for the Holidays? How to Stay Safe Amidst COVID

Be sure everyone in your household gets tested, and isolation may be necessary if you feel symptoms typical of COVID infections.

Thanksgiving is now behind us. Here’s something you may not have known about it: it is widely considered to be the most heavily trafficked holiday all year. If you have gone home to see your parents, and you typically live out of the state, then it is probably a good idea to stay where you are for at least a month. Be sure everyone in your household gets tested, and isolation may be necessary if you feel symptoms typical of COVID infections. With this in mind, what can you do to stop the spread? Let’s find out!

Postpone Special Holiday Gatherings

Thanksgiving is a feast meant to celebrate thankfulness. This year, you can be a little more thankful for everyone’s good health and good fortune. After all, postponing special gatherings may be disappointing, but it is all for the greater good. The CDC has said that even “medium-sized” gatherings with social distancing in place can be risky events. Open up the windows and keep everyone out of the kitchen who doesn’t need to be in there as you cook.

Avoid Traveling

This piece of advice is some of the best that we can give you. Traveling to see relatives or staying with friends can be done, but it isn’t well-advised. If you have been unwilling to alter your plans, then do yourself the favor of following all possible precautions. Driving is the one way to go that can assure you a low risk of transmission – public transportation such as planes, trains, and buses might present a higher chance of being exposed to the virus. Be sure to respect all rules and regulations of the state you are entering or re-entering, as the case may be.

Make Sure You Get Tested

The past eight months have seemed like a bad dream. Allergy season can make you miserable to begin with, but cold and flu season is in full swing now. This means that even a mundane sickness could be a sign of something more sinister. In any case, follow through on an abundance of caution and make sure you get tested as soon as you feel unwell.

Establish Careful Ground Rules

Having everyone wear a mask should be the basis of any event planning you organize during this season – including social events such as birthday parties or weddings that could coincide with the fall and winter holidays. Minimizing contact with other people for at least two weeks before making a visit is a good idea as well.
