How to Design a Good Logo

Does your business need a logo to propel you into success? These tips may be just what you need.

Making your company as easily identifiable as Coca Cola or Nike doesn’t happen overnight. Imagine the pages of notebooks that went into deciding the exact rounded shape of that checkmark, or the tilted set of dominos on the Domino’s Pizza logo. Logos are such a powerful force of advertising that it’s essential you get this right early – it’s certainly hard to rebrand once you’ve become recognizable, fitting your logo on business cards, letterheads, and posters. Below, you’ll find a few tips for making sure you let your logo design speak volumes for your company’s functionality, attitude, visual impact, and place in the world.

Keep It Subtle, Understated, and Even a Little Goofy

Use your logo to make a potential client chuckle. You can flip an image of something related to your company that looks like a different relevant image upside down! You can use the negative space in your logo to spell out a different word, or create a whole new picture. When “The Princess Bride” released their new DVD set for their 25th anniversary, they had the title reflected in a pool and spell itself backwards upside down. How exciting to discover that in an old favorite movie! Maybe most importantly, don’t crowd yourself with too many ideas. The Twitter logo design, that simple blue bird singing upwards towards the sky, was much more powerful than recreating a family of birds singing in a nest in a tree. Infuse your logo with your passion and personality!

Capitalize What’s Already On Your Side

Don’t be afraid to use color. If your company sells food, use the color red, as it’s been psychologically proven to remind people that they’re hungry. If you’re advertising your new yoga studio, use cool, mellow tones like soft blues and greens, to relax people before they’ve even realized what you’re offering them. Try handwriting your logo instead of using a font type on the computer, especially if you’re a new company just starting out. Anything you can do to optimize how special you know you are is helpful. Think deeply about what you’re really offering customers, and let your design reflect it. If you’re providing them with an invaluable service, like plumbing, make your logo strong and bold, without any frills. If you’re opening a new restaurant and planning to serve elegant cuisine, channel a fancier time with a black and white image and script. The options are endless, but the worst mistake to make is to let your logo feel derivative. Consumers in America are bombarded with advertising. Let your simple image speak for itself!
